Lauren, Ashley and Kaci's Online Safety Question

Should all educational sites like blogs, wikis, and youtube be blocked in schools just because they are social networking sites? Why or why not?

  1. No, some websites such as a blog can be useful for the classroom for communication and sharing information. Also, Wikis can be used in collaboration projects in order to combine classwork. However, I would not recommend social networks for classroom use because it's strictly a "social" site.

  2. I would say that that all educational sites should not be blocked in schools just because they are considered social networking sites. These are tools that help students and teachers keep in contact with each others and classroom information can be on those sites.

  3. I don't believe these sites should be blocked because in the right circumstances they can be used positively in the classroom. Ideally it would be perfect if you could keep the students from watching certain videos on YouTube but other than that I think the rest of these sites should definitely be allowed in the schools.

  4. NO! I think certain content should be blocked that is not appropriate but otherwise blogs, wikis, and even you tube can have some academic "gems in a pile of crap" that help students express themselves, promote creativity, or even help the teachers themselves get concepts across to students in ways that students can easily understand.

  5. Nope! I think certain sites should be up for educational purposes. Some things like blogs and wikis can be awesome tools for the classroom. These things allow students to work together and get to know the new technology that's out there. By limiting their computer use, we're limiting their literacy skills.
